About

the person behind... Shelly's D.I.Y. Style!

I guess you could say, I'm a creative person.  In my search to express myself I've tried my hand at many crafts including knitting, quilting, cardmaking, calligraphy etc. but my greatest love is sewing.

I have been sewing since I was very young.  I can't remember exactly when as sewing seems to have always been a part of my life.  I was blessed with a mother who was a seamstress and I gained  most of my sewing skills through her never-ending patience and dedication to the craft.  She always encouraged me to try new things and try, I did!  I am thankful to her for nurturing my creative ambitions as I have now found myself in a world of craft that I enjoy so much  I can't imagine my life without it.

I love fashion both contemporary and vintage,  particularly the 1930's through to 1950's and I'm becoming a little obsessed with vintage sewing patterns.

I have never undertaken any formal training in dressmaking, although I have, over the years attended classes in sewing but mostly I am self taught.  It gives me great pleasure to be able to sew clothing that fits and is exactly what I want.  The feeling of  satisfaction and achievement when I receive a compliment on something I have made cannot be surpassed!

My aim is to make as much of my clothing as possible and I started this blog as a place to share my progress.  To talk about the things that inspire me and hopefully inspire other people to make their own clothes.

So, grab a cuppa, make yourself at home and take a look around.   I always LOVE hearing from my friends so if you have any questions or want to know more about me feel free to leave a comment or email me.
